Our story
A hillside, two villas,
a clear idea of how a Bali stay should feel.
Maison Ulu is a personal project that became a small place to host. This is the long version.
The land
A hillside, found.
We came to Uluwatu first as guests, like most people do. We surfed at Bingin and ate fresh fish at the warung at the bottom of the staircase. We sat on a rock at Suluban watching the sunset light the cliff orange. And we stayed in villas — some excellent, some not — and slowly accumulated a list of things we'd want different if we ever had our own place.
The hillside that became Maison Ulu was found by accident, or as close to it as anything that takes years gets. Two terraced parcels facing west, six kilometres from the temple, with the kind of view that makes architects argue about who gets to design the house.
We bought the land. Then we waited a year and bought the parcel next to it. That's how an estate became two villas instead of one.
The design
Refined modern tropical, unhurried.
We wanted the architecture to disappear into the hillside, not perform on top of it. Limewashed walls. Polished concrete and travertine floors. Locally sourced ironwood and teak. Ceilings tall enough that you forget about the air conditioning. Windows large enough that you forget about the walls.
The cinema room came from a single conversation about how every villa we'd ever stayed in had a TV nobody used. We wanted a real cinema, the kind of room that earns a Wednesday night film. The two reformers came from one of us being a Pilates convert. The ice bath came from the surfers in our family.
You'll find the rooms named for what they do — not for moods or seasons or aspirational verbs. We tried to build a house, not a brochure.
Bali Super Host
Run, on the ground, by people who know what they're doing.
Maison Ulu is operated by Bali Super Host (BSH), a Bali-based property management company we partnered with from before the first guest arrived. Their team runs the day-to-day — housekeeping, maintenance, guest comms, transfers, the chef and spa rosters, and the booking platform. They are the reason every check-in is smooth. We are the reason there is a place to check into.
When you book, your contract and payment go through BSH; your morning coffee comes from one of their team. We focus on the design, the slow decisions, the editorial side of the brand. They focus on running a hospitality operation at the standard our guests expect.
How we host
A few things you'll notice.
We reply within twelve hours. Sometimes faster. Never with a template.
We don't oversell. Every photo on the website is a photo of the actual property. Every amenity listed is a real amenity. If something is on its way, we say so.
We invite the long stay. Three nights is our minimum, but the estate rewards five days, seven days, two weeks. We discount slightly for stays over ten nights — ask in the enquiry.
We're inclusive. This estate was built by a family that doesn't fit a single mold, and the kind of guests we host shouldn't have to either. Come as you are.
Plan your stay
We'd love to host you.
If anything you've read here resonates — if you're planning a stay that should be slow, considered, and sized for the group you actually have — we'd be glad to hear from you.
